M50 Lower Block Girdle

BMW M50

A laser-cut steel girdle joining the sides of the M50 block to the main bearing area, strengthening the bottom end for reliably exceeding 800Nm.

CAD DesignWelded & Laser-Cut Structures

Past a certain torque figure, the M50's lower block starts to flex under load — reliably exceeding 800Nm means the bottom end needs more rigidity than the factory casting provides on its own.

The girdle is laser cut from steel and ties the sides of the block directly to the main bearing area, tying the whole bottom end together as one stiffer structure. A useful side effect is that it also stops engine torque reaction from deforming the block around the engine mount bosses, which sit right next to the main bearing area.

Highlights

  • Strengthens the bottom end for reliable use past 800Nm
  • Laser-cut steel construction ties block sides to the main bearing area
  • Side benefit: prevents mount-load deformation around the main bearing area
